Granny Flats Just May Be What A Senior May Order!

Many people just simply love their parents, and have come to the place where they know they could not live with them, and they most definitely would not want to live without them. Sometimes individuals may want to be close in proximity to their parents; just not the same house. Granny flats are a great way to get the best of both worlds without destroying them!

Granny flats are designed for a two-person occupancy usually built in the form of a single-story home. They can either be detached or attached to another dwelling unit. They are called granny flats because it is a wonderful alternative to housing parents that have gotten up in age.

These dwelling places also are known as mother-in-law units, granny pods, casitas, in-law apartments, or ohana units that are well-known in Hawaii. They often fall into the category of tiny houses which have gained popularity over the years. They are especially popular to older generations that are looking for a roof over their head, but at a price that is affordable. These units are also great for young adults striking out on their own, or even for live-in nannies or maids.
The growth of these units may run into some barriers due to zoning laws, municipal statutes, certain building restrictions, as well as many other regulations. Usually these laws are circumvented when doing a garage conversion. However, it becomes a little more difficult when building on a structure that is new.

These flats are basically smaller version of a full-sized home, often available with kitchens that are complete in nature. Some only have microwaves and mini fridges which cut down on safety issues.
These units are very small, and some grandparents may have difficulty in down-sizing in order to dwell in such a tiny space. However, it does have the advantage of extra security for older individuals. They are often aligned with another tenant on the property which is most likely a family member. Also, the ability to share transportation, lawn care, and even child care is a benefit to both parties.
It has been proven that senior citizens seem to thrive the most when they have social outlets. Living next to a family that is young will be a help in providing such. Also knowing that one has family members in close proximity that are able to be there if something fails with their health is truly advantageous. Not to mention being close to grandchildren is always a plus!

However, some may feel that moving into this type of housing does away with any type of independence and sometimes even privacy. If that is the case, living in a retirement community or living with other adult seniors may be the most viable option.

New construction is very expensive, and some homeowners may run into a barrier of trying to obtain financing. Utility connection may also be a huge expense. Whatever the case may be, the granny flat may be a great living arrangement for senior citizens wanting to be near their loved-ones.

There are many ways to heat your home in the dead of winter, when both days and nights can be bitterly cold. These are all great ways to get some heat, but there is nothing quite like a roaring chimney fire to make your house feel warm, cozy and even romantic. To make a proper fire for heat or setting a mood, you will need to use the right kind of hardwood firewood . There are both hardwoods and softwoods that can be lit for fires, but they are not the same. Softwoods do not burn as long because they are less dense, so these are better for campfires.
